Velma M. Weeks, age 97 of East Springfield, Pa., was carried home to be with the Lord and her husband, and parents on a beam of sunlight Thursday morning, May 26, 2016 at Pleasant Ridge Manor where she had resided for less than one day.
She was born in Albion, Pa. on May 19, 1919, the daughter of the late Jess A. and Grace C. (Swoap) Carman. Growing up she shared her parents with her sister, Myrtle and enjoyed helping out at the farm, enjoying the things of life.
She married Francis R. Weeks on August 16, 1936 and together they raised one daughter and four sons. Francis later passed on September 9, 1995. Velma enjoyed everything outdoors: including gardening, hunting and fishing with her family and making afghans in winter months. She was a giving person who shared her laughter easily.
Velma is survived by her daughter, Alberta L. VanTassel (Ronald) of East Springfield, Pa.; and four sons: Francis Bruce Weeks (Sandra L.) of Girard, Pa.; Robert E. Weeks (Melody) of Columbus, OH; Richard A. Weeks (Cheryl) of Baton Rouge, LA; and Gary L. Weeks (Sandy E.) of Albion, Pa. She is also survived by her sister, Myrtle L. Harrington of Albion, Pa and many nieces and nephews. Velma was also blessed with 12 Grandchildren, 14 Great-Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren and others who called her “Grandma.”
There will be no calling hours for Velma and services will be held at a time when the family can be together. Velma will be laid to rest with her husband, Francis in Springfield Cemetery. Arrangements are being carefully handled by the Jean Evans Thompson Funeral Home in East Springfield, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial donations may be made in Velma’s Memory to either the Springfield Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 79, East Springfield, PA 16411 or to the Weeks/VanTassel Scholarship Fund c/o Erie Community Foundation, 459 W. 6th Street, Erie, PA 16507.
